The PV GreenCard is South Africa's industry-standard compliance report, issued by SAPVIA-certified installers after every installation. It proves that your system was installed by a qualified, assessed technician and meets national electrical regulations. Without it, you have no independent proof your system is safe or legal — and your insurer may refuse a claim if anything goes wrong.
It can — if the installation is not done correctly. Your insurance requires a signed Certificate of Compliance (CoC) issued by a registered electrician, specifically covering the solar system. If your installer does not provide a CoC after completion, your home insurance policy may be entirely void for any electrical fault or fire caused by the solar system.
Yes. Any grid-connected solar system in Eskom direct supply areas (like Midstream) must be registered. You must submit an Eskom grid-interconnection application, which requires a Certificate of Compliance (CoC), a PV GreenCard, and an approved inverter list match. Unregistered grid-tied systems violate Eskom rules and can trigger billing errors or penalties.
Check two things: the brand and the warranty. Stick to established brands with South African service centres — such as Pylontech, Freedom Won, Sunsynk, Dyness, Hubble, or Shoto. The battery warranty should come directly from the manufacturer (not just your installer), and should be at least 10 years or 4,000 charge cycles. If an installer cannot show you a manufacturer warranty document, walk away.
The industry standard is a minimum 5-year manufacturer warranty on inverters, which is often extendable to 10 years. Solar panels should have a 10–12 year product warranty and a 25-year performance warranty. Any installer offering shorter warranties than these minimums is selling you inferior equipment.
A full hybrid solar system (panels, inverter, and batteries) for a standard 3-bedroom house in Johannesburg typically ranges from R75,000 to R150,000, depending on your energy usage and system size.
